Ahead of yet another Republican bill to repeal and replace Obamacare, Senate Democrats have launched a talk-a-thon that is expected to last hours in protest of the proposed measure.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has been joined by Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Ron Wyden (D-OR), and Dick Durbin (D-IL), all of whom have spoken out against the secretive measure sponsored by Republican Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Lindsay Graham (R-SC). As of 7 o’clock, a Senate aide noted that the speeches would last for “several more hours.”

Warren castigated the bill as “just another version of the same old heartless ‘health care’ plan” that Republicans failed to pass in July.

Senator Markley ripped the bill as “déjà vu all over again.”

“We’ve been through this conversation. We’ve been through the Ted Cruz fake insurance bill… Drive a stake through this healthcare monster,” he said.

Senator Wyden criticized Cassidy, who appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s show earlier this year and vowed to make sure all health care legislation passed the “Jimmy Kimmel test,” for not adhering to his promise.

“I want to be clear this Cassidy bill will flunk the Jimmy Kimmel test of not hurting kids in America with pre-existing conditions,” Wyden said.

With Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) already promising to vote against the legislation, Democrats need only two more defections to kill the bill. So far, Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), John McCain (R-AZ), and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) – all of whom voted against the July effort – remain undecided.

With yet another 11th hour measure that has not been scored by the Congressional Budget Office, Republicans continue to show no regard for transparency or responsibility. While that might pass muster for Mitch McConnell, the American people expect more from those charged with handling our health and livelihood./ BRIAN TYLER COHEN
