Shortly after Republican Kevin Nicholson announced his candidacy to unseat Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) in 2017, his own parents donated $2,700 – the maximum campaign contribution allowed by law – to his opponent’s re-election campaign.

Per a Federal Election Commission filing by the Baldwin campaign, each of Nicholson’s parents, Donna and Michael, donated $2,700 to the Democratic Senator in December. While they’ve reached the maximum limit for the primary election, they can donate up to that amount again during the general election.

Nicholson himself has conceded that his family has long espoused Democratic views. He himself was a Democrat before becoming a Marine and fighting in Iraq. It was then that he vehemently disagreed with the Democratic Party’s hardline stance against the Iraq war.

“My parents have a different worldview than I do, and it is not surprising that they would support a candidate like Tammy Baldwin who shares their perspective.”

“I’m a conservative today not because I was born one, but because of the experience I earned as a Marine in combat, my experience as a husband and father, my choice to be a Christian, the schools I chose to attend and the decision to pursue the career that I have. Regardless of who may disagree with my life decisions, I would not trade these experiences for anything, and they will always guide my views as Wisconsin’s next U.S. Senator.”

That being said, this is the first time that Nicholson’s parents have actually donated to Baldwin’s campaign.

If this isn’t a commentary on the flagrant unpopularity of the GOP in 2018, nothing is.
