The Mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulin Cruz, has just responded to President Trump’s hateful early morning Twitter attacks from his golf course in New Jersey – and her reaction would be a valuable lesson in leadership for our lazy and uncaring President if he ever bothered to watch anything besides FOX & Friends.
Joining MSNBC’s Joy Ann Reid, Mayor Cruz said she had more important things to do than to get bogged down in a war of words with our digitally deficient would-be despot, saying that she and her team are quickly “moving ahead:
That’s what it’s all about. All about saving lives, not about politics, not about petty comments. It’s about moving forward, putting boots on the ground and saving lives.
She did take a moment to respond directly to the tweets, however, pointing out that all she was doing was asking him to do his job and if he wouldn’t take her word for it, he should listen to the generals that he worships so dearly:
“Actually, I was asking for help. I wasn’t saying anything nasty about the president. But don’t take my word for it. General Buchanan, a three star general, has said as one of the first comments he’s made about the Puerto Rico situation that he doesn’t have enough troops to get the situation under control. So, who am I? I’m just a little mayor from the capital city of San Juan. This is a three star general telling the world right now he does not have the appropriate means and tools to take care of the situation.”
The President’s behavior today – attacking the Mayor for begging for help during a humanitarian crisis because he realizes it reflects poorly on him – is so cartoonishly cruel that it doesn’t seem real, like a bad joke exaggerating what he might or might not do.
We applaud Mayor Cruz for taking the high road in her remarks and dearly hope Trump takes her advice, listens to his generals, and gets her the help she needs.
