Republicans across the country are abandoning Roy Moore, their party’s Senate candidate in Alabama, in light of numerous allegations that he molested underage girls and pursued inappropriate relationships with teenagers in the past.
Moore has denied the allegations, despite the fact that none of the women knew each other prior to coming forward with their stories and the fact that one of the accusers has Moore’s signature in her high school yearbook. It’s also been revealed that Moore was banned from a mall in his hometown because he repeatedly pursued young girls there.
Now, the AL.com editorial board has penned a scathing takedown of Moore, which has been published in several prominent local publications. The article, entitled “Our view: Roy Moore grossly unfit for office” begins with a blunt and undeniable statement:
“Roy Moore simply cannot be a U.S. Senator. Even if his party and many of its adherents still think it possible, it is unthinkable — for his state, and his country.”
From there, things only get worse for the Senate candidate as the article goes on to list the allegations leveled against him so far, including molesting a 14-year-old girl and attempted to rape a 16-year-old while he was District Attorney.
The women have had their courage greeted with a vicious smear campaign, with many right-wing pundits and publications accusing them of fabricating their perfectly believable accounts. The AL.com piece says emphatically that the editorial board believes the women.
The article rebukes the popular conservative talking point that one shouldn’t assume Moore is guilty. Such presumption of innocence is crucial to making our justice system work yes, but it has no place in our electoral discussions. The allegations are credible and Moore has no place in the U.S. Senate. Writes AL.com:
“The seriousness of these incidents cannot be overstated. They should not be parsed with talk of statutes of limitations or whether proof exists. Proof beyond a reasonable doubt is a consideration for the courtroom, not the ballot box. When choosing our representative before the rest of the world, character matters.”
If Roy Moore refuses to suspend his campaign and insists on trying to weasel his way into the most powerful legislative body in the world he must be rejected soundly and by a huge margin. Alabama voters must send a strong signal that there is no room for pedophiliac predators in the Senate. The Al.com piece ends with a powerful call to action:
“It’s time that he and his party read the writing on the wall: His candidacy is over. His true character has been revealed. It’s time for the GOP to remove its official support.
And since he and his party can’t assure it, the voters of Alabama must.”
